If you have a dog, you've probably heard the term "seizure" before. You might even have seen your dog have a seizure. But what exactly is a seizure? And why do dogs get them?
A seizure occurs when the brain's neurons misfire and temporarily stop working properly. Seizures can be caused by disease, trauma, or other issues—but there are also some common causes that you should know about in case your dog has a seizure of their own.
Here are four of the most common causes for dog seizures:
Head Trauma
If your dog has head trauma or an injury that could cause bleeding or swelling in the brain, they may experience seizures as a result of this trauma or injury. It's important to take them to the vet right away if this happens so that they can be given treatment and monitored until their condition improves!
Poisoning
If your dog is acting strange after eating something that isn't food (like some tape), take him to the vet immediately—you may have just saved his life!
Low Blood Sugar
If your dog's seizure happens when they haven't eaten in a while, they may have low blood sugar levels. This can cause them to convulse and become unconscious. If you think your dog has low blood sugar levels, give them something sweet (like table scraps) to eat right away, then take them to the vet as soon as possible!
High Fever
If your dog has a high fever and starts having seizures, go ahead and call their regular vet first before calling an emergency animal hospital—your vet might be able to help with some quick advice or medicine that can help bring down their temperature before it gets too high for comfort!
